Shut Up Sona (2020) _TOP_

My personality as a cinematographer was also to be super picky about my subjects. Storytelling for me is this amorphous artistic quest where many disciplines feed off each other and enrich each other. Frankly, I never knew where the cinematographer in me blended into the director or storyteller.

Gupta perfectly highlighted the well-intended hard-to-recognize patriarchy with a perfect Tennis clip in the film. The clip was from a mixed doubles match where the male players (Jack Sock and Roger Federer) started rallying among themselves. Hence, the female players (Belinda Bencic and Colleen Vandeweghe) excused themselves from the game. It was actually done as a joke in the match. But it fits perfectly in the narrative both Gupta and Mohapatra tried to portray. Even without any ill-will, certain gender inequalities need to be recognized. Recognized and then addressed. Till that time, the rebels must not shut up.

In this provocative and personal documentary, director Lina Al Abed searches for traces of her disappeared father: a seemingly ordinary Palestinian family man who was also a secret member of a militant splinter faction and vanished when she was just a child.

With his trumpet, hamster and a good mood, Anton Kuznetsov tours Eastern Europe as Antoha MC, a Russian hipster one-man band with a happy message. His positive music for party audiences features great beats, personal raps and colourful trumpet solos. At home, where Russian authorities are trying to constrain rap, not everyone understands his good intentions. This intimate documentary portrait features no interviews, voice-overs or talking heads. Instead, the filmmakers follow Kuznetsov on tour while the subdued artist develops from a modest cult figure into a rising superstar.

The Last Dance is a ten-part docu-series that revolves around the career of basketball legend, Michael Jordan. The series focuses on his time with the Chicago Bulls and features unseen footage from the 97-98 season, his final season with the team. The series also includes interviews with eminent NBA personalities such as Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Steve Kerr, and Phil Jackson. Sports documentaries often have a way of shedding light on themes such as mental health and personal growth apart from the sports, which can inspire many.

US PREMIERE Indian singer Sona Mohapatra uses her powerful voice not only to entertain, but to speak out against Indian music industry practices that refuse to give female performers a fair shake. Director Deepti Gupta follows the unapologetically outspoken artist for three years of concerts, controversies, and conflicts with religious fundamentalists, social media trolls, and others who would rather she just shut up. Fearlessly fighting for gender equality, Sona has no intention of silencing her voice.

Green-Up had the pleasure to work with the Oregon Park District and Cunningham Associates installing a Sona by Yalp. This arch is the future wave of play equipment. This piece of equipment is electronic. It has sensors that activate when kids walk under it. The Sona will ask the kids if they want to play a game and then the kids can choose between multiple games programmed into the Sona. Through sensors under the shapes in the surfacing kids can play math games, memory games, and musical chairs. The Sona will shut off after the kids leave.
